Southwoods, Mizuno begin Fil-Am clash

BAGUIO CITY—Manila Southwoods starts its title retention bid against chief challenger Mizuno in the Fil championship division of the 61st Fil-Am Golf Invitational tournament today at the Camp John Hay course here.

With the top players from Canlubang and The Country Club missing the tournament, the Southwoods-Mizuno duel will provide centerpiece action in the annual tournament sponsored this year by Toyota.

Southwoods is fielding a young lineup composed of Chepe Dulay, Joseph Tambunting, Teody Pascual, Charlie Chang and Sung Wan-yoon.

Backed by former junior ace Juami Rocha, Mizuno will gun for its second title in six years.

“Handicap-wise, we are behind but I think we can give them a good fight,” said Rocha, who played for Southwoods in the team’s debut here in 1996.

Backing Rocha are Rodel Mangalubnan, Richard Joson, JB Garcia and King Stehmeier.

Meanwhile, the scores in the other divisions came in late on the second day of the event backed by American Eye Center, Rudy Project, Wilson Sports, Gatorade, Carts Plaza and Supreme Bikes.
