Up Close With The Cars of Need For Speed

Sixty-six (66) Million US Dollars went into the production for the DreamWorks movie, "Need for Speed".  Starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul as Tobey Marshall, "Need for Speed" may have garnered rotten reviews, but the racing drama film has managed to recoup nearly its entire production budget during its opening weekend.

The story revolves around a street racer who was wrongly convicted for involuntary manslaughter during a race gone wrong. As typical Hollywood plots go, the protagonist seeks revenge after his release. This video game-based movie comes at an apt time to fill a void left by the Fast and Furious series after the demise of Paul Walker.

In an era when Hollywood depends on computers for much of its visuals, "Need for Speed" is CGI-less.  All of the stunts, flips, screeches, skids and explosions are real. Kudos to director, Scott Waugh, for having to work doubly hard because of this.

This post comes as a tribute to the cars which were modified, extensive bodyworks  executed…and then all blown to bits, for our amusement.

Here are some of the super cars in Need For Speed for us to covet and salivate over:

Spania GTA Spano

Built as a secret project in 2005, the Spania GTA Spano is a Spanish supercar built in Valencia by the company GTA Motor, a sister company to GTA Motor Competición, and was first released to the public in 2008 when the model was presented under the name of GTA Concept. The first units were manufactured and delivered at the end of 2010.  I first came into contact with thte GTA at Top Marques, the world’s greatest supercar show on earth.

Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is a mid-engined sports car, designed and developed in Germany by the Volkswagen Group and manufactured in Molsheim, France, by Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.

The Veyron Super Sport version is recognised by Guinness World Records as the fastest street-legal production car in the world, with a top speed of 430.9 km/h (267.7 mph).

Ford Mustang

What's not to love in a Ford Mustang.  From the time I began to recognize the distinct shapes of cars as a toddler, the Mustang already captured my heart.  Over the years we've seen the Mustang change its shape from being boxy to curvy and everything in between.

An early version of a Mustang with an early version of me.

I look around at the Mustangs in Metro Manila today and
feel sorry for these objects of adoration.  Why?  Because, like their equine counterparts, these beauties were meant to run free.  Yes, there is that streamlined elegance in today's power horse, not to mention the audible difference of that baritone rumble.

I cannot take the idea of being seated in a Mustang only to be stuck in EDSA's traffic.  Such is the making of a tragedy.  Take it from one who's driven California's Highway 1 with the Pacific Ocean and the Big Sur in full view, with Candi Staton on the stereo belting out, "Young Hearts Run Free".
